-2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
-1 carrot, peeled and diced
-1 Granny Smith apple, cored and diced
-1 medium butternut squash, peeled and diced
- 1/4 t. dried sage
-1 small white or yellow onion, diced
-1/2 teaspoon salt, or more to taste
-1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or more to taste
-1/8 teaspoon cayenne, more if you like it spicy
-Pinch of ground cinnamon and nutmeg
-1/2 cup light canned coconut milk, plus more to serve
What You’ll Need
A large crockpot
Food processor or immersion blender
Soup bowls and spoons for serving
PREPARATION
  1. Add your vegetable broth, garlic, carrot, apple, butternut squash, sage, onion, salt, pepper, cayenne, cinnamon and nutmeg all into the slow cooker and toss it all up to combine.
  2. Cook for 6-8 hours on low or for 3-4 hours on high, or until the squash is completely tender and mashes easily with a fork.
  3. Stir in your coconut milk.
  4. Use an immersion blender to puree until your soup is silky smooth, or, pour into a food processor or blender – careful, it’s hot!
  5. Taste and season with additional salt, pepper and cayenne if needed.
  6. Swirl a little extra coconut milk into each bowl to serve.
Your smile-worthy soup is ready to enjoy. Go coconuts!

About "Braces Friendly Eats" by Collins Orthodontics
When Malia prepped for clear braces treatment at Collins Orthodontics, she shared her plan with us. Her meal plan! She jumped on the internet, found the foods perfect for her first week in braces, and prepped them before ever sitting back in our chair at Collins Orthodontics.
The result? Collins Orthodontics presents Braces Friendly Eats featuring Malia Howe—healthy foods you’ll love that won’t irritate your smile while you start your treatment.

Meet Malia
Say hello to mom, blogger and (surprise!) ninja in the kitchen, Malia Howe. She never had braces before and recently decided she was ready for the perfect smile. And she didn’t have to look far for the right orthodontist, Dr. Grant Collins, a family friend. Together they decided to bring these tasty, smile-friendly eats to patients everywhere.
