Braces Friendly Eats: PB & J Smoothie

INGREDIENTS
1 cup plain Greek yogurt  
1 cup vanilla unsweetened almond milk  
1 T. peanut butter or 2 T. powdered peanut butter 
1 T. chia seeds 1 cup strawberries (can use frozen) 
Handful of ice  (unless using frozen berries) 
1 to 2 t. honey to taste 

Strawberry allergy? Strawberries can be substituted with peaches, raspberries, or bananas – all are equally healthy and delicious.  

What You’ll Need 
Blender/Food Processor spoon for doling ingredients in 1 glass 

PREPARATION  
  1. Rinse and cut up your fruit of choice. 
  1. Add the following into your blender: 
  • Cup of strawberries (or fruit of preference) 
  • 1 cup of  plain Greek yogurt 
  • tablespoon, peanut butter 
  • tablespoon of chia seeds 
  • 1 or 2 teaspoons of honey to taste 
  • 1 cup of vanilla unsweetened almond milk 
  • A handful of ice 
  1. Blend until smooth!

Braces Friendly Eats: Crockpot Butternut Squash & Apple Soup

Butternut Squash & Apple Soup

INGREDIENTS
Servings: 6 – 8 bowls
Butternut Squash and Apple Soup
-2 cups vegetable or chicken broth
-2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
-1 carrot, peeled and diced
-1 Granny Smith apple, cored and diced
-1 medium butternut squash, peeled and diced
- 1/4 t. dried sage
-1 small white or yellow onion, diced
-1/2 teaspoon salt, or more to taste
-1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or more to taste
-1/8 teaspoon cayenne, more if you like it spicy
-Pinch of ground cinnamon and nutmeg
-1/2 cup light canned coconut milk, plus more to serve
What You’ll Need
A large crockpot
Food processor or immersion blender
Soup bowls and spoons for serving
PREPARATION 
  1. Add your vegetable broth, garlic, carrot, apple, butternut squash, sage, onion, salt, pepper, cayenne, cinnamon and nutmeg all into the slow cooker and toss it all up to combine.
  2. Cook for 6-8 hours on low or for 3-4 hours on high, or until the squash is completely tender and mashes easily with a fork.
  3. Stir in your coconut milk.
  4. Use an immersion blender to puree until your soup is silky smooth, or, pour into a food processor or blender – careful, it’s hot!
  5. Taste and season with additional salt, pepper and cayenne if needed. 
  6. Swirl a little extra coconut milk into each bowl to serve.
Your smile-worthy soup is ready to enjoy. Go coconuts!

Braces Friendly Eats: Pesto Pasta

INGREDIENTS
Servings: 4
Pesto Pasta
2 cups, fresh basil
2 T pine nuts
2 T unsalted butter
1/3 c. extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (NOT the powder in the can, trust us!)
1/2 t. salt
1 box, pasta of your choice
What You’ll Need
1 large cooking pot
1 bowl
Food processor
PREPARATION 
  1. Boil up your pasta of your choice.
  2. Add the following into your food processor:
    • Rinsed fresh basil
    • Two tablespoons of unsalted butter
    • ½ cup of grated parmesan cheese
    • 2 tablespoons of pine nuts
    • Two garlic cloves
    • ½ teaspoon of salt
    • 1/3 cup of extra virgin olive oil
  3. Process your ingredients together (scrape the inner sides of the food processor as needed), your pesto will blend into a thick, yummy sauce. 
  4. Drain your pasta, but don’t rinse.
  5. Toss pesto over hot pasta and mix well –or- freeze the pesto separately if you aren’t quite ready to devour it.
Enjoy now or later! You can freeze pesto and let it thaw in the fridge overnight for a quick and tasty dinner. Now that’s something to smile about!

Braces Friendly Eats: Potato Leek Soup


Collins Orthodontics Presents: Braces Friendly Eats
Potato Leek Soup
Time for Some Comfort Food!

Potato Leek Soup
Servings: 4
8 cups of chicken or vegetable broth
6 potatoes, peeled and cut into large pieces
4 leeks (white/light green parts only), thoroughly washed and sliced
3 stalks celery, roughly chopped
1 bay leaf
1/2 t dried thyme
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup of heavy cream  
Cheddar cheese and/or bacon bits to top it off
What You’ll Need
1 large cooking pot
Food processor or immersion blender
Soup bowls and spoons for serving

PREPARATION 
  1. Place your stock, potatoes, leeks, celery, bay leaf and thyme in a large pot and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. 
  2. Bring it all to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes, (until potatoes are soft).
  3. Your bay leaf’s work is done here – let’s remove it.
  4. Next, blend the mixture until it’s silky smooth in your pot with an immersion blender or in batches in your food processor or blender.
  5. Pour on your cream and simmer your soup until it’s thickened for about 10-15 minutes.
  6. Serve and top it off with your choice of shredded cheddar and or bacon bits.
Your hot and delicious bowl of potato goodness is guaranteed to be smile-worthy!

Creamy Clementine Smoothie

INGREDIENTS
Servings: 1
Creamy Clementine Smoothie
1 cup, milk
4 clementines, peeled
2 small (or 1 large) bananas
½ cup vanilla Greek yogurt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 handful of ice
What You’ll Need
Blender/Food Processor
1 spoon for doling ingredients in
1 glass cup
PREPARATION 
  1. Peel your clementines and bananas.
  2. Add the following into your blender:
    • Peeled clementines and banana(s)
    • ½ cup of vanilla Greek yogurt
    • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
    • 1 cup of milk
    • A handful of ice
  3. Blend until smooth!
Easy, right? Now pour your smoothie into a glass and enjoy your refreshment that’s as sweet as it is healthy – that’s something to smile about!
